One of the most characteristic features of Golden Retrievers is the coat. It may be either straight, wavy or something in between. The outer coat is rather coarse and repels water; the undercoat is soft and dense. The coat is of medium length over most of the body, with longer feathering on the tail, the back of the legs and on the chest. The coat color ranges from a light gold to deep gold. The color should be rich and lustrous; lighter feathering is acceptable. Red colors, gray and white markings are unacceptable.
In Golden Retrievers over-all appearance, gait, balance and working abilities are given more emphasis than that of any other component. These dogs should be symmetrical, active, sound, powerful, not clumsy, nor too lean. Head should be broad and slightly arched. Stop should be well defined, but not too abrupt. Muzzle is straight in profile, deeper and wider at stop than at tip.
Eyes are dark, medium in size, set deep and well apart. Their expression is friendly and intelligent. Ears should not be very long; the ideal length of the ear is to the corner of the eye. Nose of a Golden Retriever should be black or brown; pink noses are disqualified. Teeth should meet in scissors bite; undershot or overshot bites are disqualified.
Height: Males are 23-24 inches at the shoulders; females are 21.5-22.5 inches.
Weight: Male Golden Retrievers are from 65 to 75 pounds; females are 55-65 pounds.
