AKC registered the breed in 1925 and classified it as sporting-gundog group. The original purpose of these dogs was participating in water and land hunting. Today the breed is used in field trials, in various kinds of competitions, as guide dogs for the blind, and for many other purposes. Like many large breeds it has to be socialized and trained properly, because it tends to dominate. The only disadvantages of such dogs are that they shed heavily twice a year and need much room and a fenced yard to exercise and play.

To feel secure, they need to interact with the family much. If the owner cannot devote much time to the pet, it’s recommended to have several dogs to let them entertain themselves without getting bored and destructive.
