Pups and younger dogs of this breed need much exercise, which makes them unsuited for people that cannot spend much time training and socializing the pet. Without enough activity and mental stimulation, these intelligent dogs become bored and may develop bad habits, such as chewing, digging and barking. Some dogs tend to roam. When bored they are excellent escape artists. Not all of them are able to find the way home and they may end up in animal shelters. Breed rescues establish agreements with local shelters to ensure that stray purebred dogs will be transferred to their care rather than euthanized.
