Golden Labrador Retriever

The first dog of this breed was accepted for registration by the Kennel Club of England in 1903. First, the breed was called Flat Coats. Dogs with such coat color became a separate breed in 1911. These dogs have been in the US since the late 19th century, but there was no serious interest in them until about 1930’s. The AKC recognized this breed in 1932. At that time, it was a rare breed. The GRCA, the largest of the parent breed clubs in the AKC, was founded by breed fanciers in 1938.

This breed has always been used as a companion in hunting and fishing. These dogs like to swim and dive and they are naturally adapted to this activity. The characteristic feature of the breed is that the dogs are prone to obesity due to their appetite. The dogs of this breed are medium-sized, with powerful jaws and neck, designed for carrying the game in the mouth. The dogs vary from 22 to 24 inches at the withers and weigh 55-80 pounds; males are a little larger than females.
