A well-mannered dog should pass through the Canine Good Citizen test, which is made up of 10 tasks. It should accept a friendly stranger and allow petting and grooming without showing shyness or resentment. The dog should walk on a loose lead without straining. A well-trained dog should be able to walk through the crowd in public places and sit down in the place commanded by the handler. As for strange dogs and other animals, the well-mannered dog should show no more than a casual interest, but not aggressiveness.

Like all large dogs, this breed tends to develop hip or elbow dysplasia, which means poor development of the hip or elbow joint. It can be easily detected by X-ray. Some bloodlines of the breed are susseptible to subvalvular aortic stenosis (SAS,) epilepsy, hypothyroidism, skin allergies and other disorders. This breed is also prone to eye disorders, such as Central Progressive Retinal Atrophy and hereditary cataracts. To make sure that a dog is free from eye disorders, ask the breeder for a CERF certificate. There are no absolutely healthy breeds, as the gene pool of any breed has recessive genes which may cause different health disorders in the offspring.
