All Golden Retrievers are naturally pack animals and require constant attention and companionship of the family. If the dog is left alone for sustained periods of time, it may destroy the landscape and bark without a cause. If you own a Golden Retriever, you will have to walk with it every day and provide the dog with play or work, such as retrieving, chasing, or running with you. All Goldens enjoy swimming.

Every purebred dog costs more than its price. You will have to spend much on high quality food, equipment, obedience classes, vet care, even if the dog is absolutely healthy. Vaccinations and routine checks are necessary to prevent serious problems.

The last concern, but not the least, Golden Retrievers shed heavily twice a year and constantly lose some hair. Such a luxurious coat requires regular brushing at least every other day. Occasional baths are also needed to help keep the coat healthy. If you plan to show your Golden Retrievers, they need to be groomed by a professional, which is rather expensive.

It appeared in England in the middle of the 19th century due to deliberate crossing of a yellow wavy coated retriever and a Tweed water spaniel.
