Golden Retrievers Pictures - Care

Being very sociable dogs, Golden Retrievers cannot live in the backyard, in kennels or be kept on the chain. They need to live with the family and feel that they are part of the pack. The owner should spend much time with the dog not only in training but also in just playing with it. Golden Retrievers cannot find a job for themselves and are likely to dig holes in the yard, chase objects and chew things.

It is very important to teach the dog good manners and housetrain it from early childhood. Dogs of this breed should not be left alone in the house for a long time, because they become bored and miss people very much. Lonely Golden Retrievers become difficult to control and owners often give such pets up to shelters and rescue organizations.

What makes this breed popular among many families is its temperament and people-oriented nature. Practically all Golden Retrievers are easy-going, friendly, and tolerant to children, strangers and other pets. These dogs are very intelligent and easy to train. Shyness, aggression and hyperactivity are not typical of this breed.

Golden Retrievers Pictures - Health Problems

Golden Retrievers are generally healthy, but like all purebreds, they are prone to several genetic disorders. The main problems with this breed are: hip dysplasia, which means poor development of the hip joint; heart disorder (Subvalvular Aortic Stenosis (SAS), eye diseases (cataract, PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy) and CPRA (Central Progressive Retinal Atrophy); Von Willebrands Disease or bleeding disorder, which is similar to hemophilia; thyroid problems; skin allergies and epilepsy. To remain healthy Golden Retrievers require much exercise and attention.
